Figure AI

#38 in Robotics

Figure AI, Inc. is an American robotics company developing AI-powered humanoid robots. Founded in 2022 by Brett Adcock (also known for founding Archer Aviation and Vettery), Figure is building the world's first commercially viable autonomous humanoid robot. The company has developed multiple generations including Figure 01, Figure 02 (with 16 DOF hands and 25kg carrying capacity), Helix (with 35 DOF and vision-language-action AI), and Figure 03 (complete redesign with next-gen sensory suite, tactile sensors, and home-suitable safety features). Figure has partnered with BMW for automotive manufacturing deployment and operates the BotQ facility capable of producing 12,000 humanoids per year.

Figure 02 is the latest humanoid robot developed by Figure AI, a California-based company at the forefront of robotics innovation. This second-generation robot represents a significant leap forward in autonomous humanoid technology, designed for commercial viability and real-world applications. Standing at 168 cm tall and weighing 70 kg, the Figure 02 humanoid boasts impressive specifications. It can carry payloads up to 20 kg and operate continuously for 5 hours before requiring a recharge. The robot’s movement capabilities are noteworthy, with a walking speed of 1.2 meters per second, allowing for efficient navigation in various environments. One of the most striking features is its sleek, matte black exterior, a departure from its predecessor’s chrome finish. This new design isn’t just aesthetic; it’s functional, with all cabling now integrated into the limbs for better protection and durability. The robot’s battery capacity has been increased by 50%, with the power source now integrated into the torso, improving balance and agility. Figure 02’s hands have been carefully engineered to mimic human dexterity. With 16 degrees of freedom and the ability to carry up to 25 kg, these hands are designed to manipulate a wide range of objects, bringing the robot closer to human-like capabilities in object handling. A key advancement in Figure 02 humanoid is its enhanced computational power. The robot features triple the computing and AI inference capabilities of its predecessor, enabling it to process complex tasks autonomously. Six RGB cameras provide visual input, working in conjunction with an onboard vision language model for advanced perception and object recognition. Perhaps the most exciting feature of Figure 02 is its integration with OpenAI’s language models. This collaboration allows the robot to engage in natural speech conversations through onboard microphones and speakers. Users can issue voice commands, and the robot can respond, making human-robot interaction more intuitive and efficient. Figure AI has already begun testing Figure 02 humanoid in real-world scenarios. The company has partnered with BMW, conducting trials at their Spartanburg, South Carolina facility. This partnership aims to explore the potential of humanoid robots in automotive manufacturing, potentially revolutionizing production processes. As the field of humanoid robotics continues to evolve, Figure 02 stands out as a prime example of the convergence between advanced AI and robotics. Its combination of physical capabilities, autonomous operation, and natural language interaction positions it as a promising solution for various industries, from manufacturing and logistics to potentially even home assistance in the future.
